如果我记得没错的话，这个谚语中的 iron 指的是熨衣服的烙铁。

年纪大的人小时候可能见过烙铁。把烙铁放到火上烤热，然后就可以熨衣服了。

google 了一下。绝大多数都说跟打铁有关。只有一篇文章提到跟熨衣服有关。
