阿多尼斯十分喜爱打猎。阿佛洛狄忒担心他会遭到不幸，很多次劝他别去，可是阿多尼斯却不听。有一次，他出去打猎时，在山间的林子里，一头凶猛的野猪突然窜出来，阿多尼斯猝不及防，野猪咬断了他的脚大动脉，鲜血喷洒出来。阿多尼斯倒在地上。
阿佛洛狄忒从远方听见阿多尼斯的惨叫声，心急如焚，不顾一切地跑去营救她的情人。山谷里到处长满了白色玫瑰，带刺的玫瑰划破了阿佛洛狄忒的脚、腿及手，鲜血洒了一路。但是爱神还是来晚了一步，阿多尼斯还是死在了阿佛洛狄忒的腿上。爱神悲痛欲绝，放声大哭。据说她的悲号，被后人作为哀婉动听的《阿多尼斯挽歌》所传唱。而染上阿佛洛忒鲜血的白玫瑰，以后便开出了红花，变为红玫瑰。由于红玫瑰的来历有这幺一段美丽感人的传说，所以被人们看为是爱情的象征。
