This is called Intarsia, a wood inlaying with a scroll saw.
The "Woodwork and Crafts" magzine provides some scroll saw patterns.My wife doesn't really like it, so I stop doing it. I have the pattern of the leading goose.
Intarsia is pretty popular in US, a low cost woodcraft hobby.
The only machine tool you need is a scroll saw, $100 is more than enough to buy a decent one. You can order all kind of thin, surfaced woodstocks from many mail order stores. They sell both woods and patterns.
I start to use CNC (computer numerical control) machine to carve wood directly. For instance, take a picture of a person's face, and turn it to gcode, load it to computer and carve the face in wood. It's just for fun.

LD喜欢木头，因为即便是同一种木材，每块木头都有自己的特点。取决于树木的产地，生长速度及其树龄，木头的颜色，纹理和材质都会有所不同。同一棵树，不同的部位也会有很大差异。有些树节（burl ）可以有大理石一般美丽的花纹。
曾经有生命的大树被砍倒后，木材的颜色会继续变化。一件木刻完成，经过打蜡上清漆等表面处理后，在光线下仍会继续氧化变色。。。
我们家还有很多零碎：钥匙链，香水瓶，花瓶，蜡烛台之类，收在楼下的箱子里，这里就不一一显摆了。

把学徒算上工龄，再加上多少有点真功夫，就给弄了那个级吧。但我看不排除当时政策多少也有些讨好小商业生产者的成分。
后来老爸给调到建筑程对带徒弟，他那些手艺估计就给浪费了。偶而给别人修旧家具，也不敢张扬了。
