Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is a federal program that provides monthly payments to people with limited income and few resources. SSI is for people who are 65 or older, as well as people of any age, including children, who are blind or have disabilities. To be eligible for SSI, you must also have little or no income and few resources. The value of the things you own must be less than $2,000 if you’re single or less than $3,000 for married couples living together. We don’t count the value of your home if you live in it, and, usually, we don’t count the value of your car. We may not count the value of certain other resources, such as a burial plot.

As of 2024, the California State Supplementary Payment (SSP) is $239.94 per month for individuals and $607.83 per month for couples. The total benefit for an individual is $1,182.94, and $2,022.83 for couples.
Retirement
Monthly payments based on your lifetime earnings. To be eligible, you must:
Be age 62 or older, and
Have worked and paid Social Security taxes for 10 years or more.
Disability
Monthly payments for people who have:
A disability or blindness, and
Enough work history.
Survivor
Monthly payments to certain family members of someone who worked and paid Social Security taxes before they died, including:
Spouses.
Ex-spouses.
Children.
Dependent parents.
