Now just retired and found some silver lining in this high property tax state: no retirement tax for pension, ss, IRA. We converted some pretax Ira money to Roth, and paid no state tax on it. So here's our plan: downside to a smaller house in the current state and buy another property at a different state such as CA or FL, but keep the main residence in the present state for tax purposes. Does this sound like a good idea?

worthwhile to live in a high income tax state, because you will find that you still have to pay a lot for your part of income that is not pension.
Many states give tax exemptions to pensions earned in other states.
But FL has no imcome tax, what's the harm to become FL resident, if you plan to stay there longer?
