I had 3 water leak claims last 10 years (6 houses). My insurance company would always keep some (10 or 20% I forgot) payment until the completion of project. Contractor can negotiate with insurance company if they find out the repair cost is higher than estimate.
Tile/floor matching is tough sometimes so repair estimate could include changing everything in that area (could be a few times as large as affected area). In one ongoing claim I am in, the mitigation company wanted to break up all granite countertop. I insisted NO so a granite company came to take them off. There were a few small chips but I am ok with that. 50% saving compared with getting new granite countertops, not to mention longer project time.
I had to order some backsplash tiles on internet in order to match current ones. Shipping cost twice as much as tiles themselves. I need to save some money to prepare premium increase.
The repair cost is between $10-25k for 3 claims I filed over 15 years. mitigation a few $k. We had a temperary sink but tenants don't have a dish washer to use. I had to give rent discount to tenants.
今年8月上旬,我家位于二楼的洗衣机有问题造成水溢出来,导致水淹了laundry room 并一楼的两个房间ceiling也淹了。我第二天打电话给保险公司。他们告诉我马上找一个清理公司来清理。我找了一个公司来清理后, 这个公司给了清理费用报价$1900多,并由这个公司将这个报价送给保险公司。同时,来清理的人说, 他们公司还有一个部门是负责repair的。 如果我愿意, 他可以让那个部门的人来上门先评估repair的费用。 几天后,那个repair部门的人来评估,报价是$4800多。 我把这个报价送给了保险公司。直到11月初,我收到保险公司的第一个支票,这个支票的coverage 包括清理费用不到$1500, repair不到$500。我找到我的保险agent, 他说他帮助沟通一下。以后就没有任何消息了。 在这期间,因为这个漏水,laundry 的地方搞得洗衣服很不方便。 我们就利用感恩节把那个地方自己给修好了。昨天收到了保险公司寄来的支票约$3800。 我的deductible 是$1000。 同时昨天那个repair 公司也来email问:什么时候开始repair. 我的问题是:我把laundry 的地方已经搞好了, 只让repair公司搞一楼的ceiling可以吗?会怎样收费?或者我找另一个公司repair ceiling 可以吗?是不是可以?

Allstate is really good in term of claim.
我换房顶的时候,是房顶公司去帮我和保险争取赔偿,他们有一个合同,说他们讨来钱,如果我不找他们换房顶,他们要追究我的赔偿。
如果那个repair公司和你没有这样的合同,那么随便你,可以根本不找他们修,可以找他们修但是只修一部分,并且要要个好价钱(否则根本不找他们修),总之你随便讨价还价。原来的那个4800只是一个估价。
最关键是你和repair公司没有签任何合同。
一是需要直接支付或者间接支付licensed contractor。间接是指业主背书后,全部付contractor。第二种是估价后保险公司直接付业主,业主自己请人或者自己做。一般像你的case属于小金额,保险公司用了后一种。你不必理会前面估价的公司,或者自己做,或者再请便宜一点的做,或者部分部分都随你。
假如,这repair公司 是保险公司长期约定和指派的,若不让他们修,这估价4800就会少给,或。。?
水淹后,家里搞得乱七八糟,我的心情也很糟糕。加上这是第一次报claim,不知道保险公司会不会给赔偿。也不知道repair会花多少钱。
