回答“什么人是美国人”的政治法律定义很简单：获得美国国籍的人就是美国人。然而，独立后，美国公民们开始个大讨论：从文化上讲，啥人是美国人？就是说，必须给出美国公民的文化特点。政治家、文史家、哲学家、……，都做了尝试，都失败了。
1782年，一位平民百姓，一位法国出生的美国农民，在通讯中提了美国人的文化定义。他说：“究竟啥人才算是个美国人、一个全新的人？不管他是欧洲人或是欧洲人后裔，他的奇怪血缘混合是在任何别的国家都没有的。我可以为您说说美国家庭：祖父是英国人，他的妻子是荷兰人，儿子跟法国人结婚，生了四个孩子，这四个孩子跟国籍不同的人结婚。他就是美国人。这个人，把他的故乡遗留的古老习惯和偏见都抛弃在身后，来接受一种全新的生活方式，决心服从一个新的政府，从一无所有开始建设自己的新的生活地位。他被最宽广的学校教育所容纳而使他成为一个美国人。所有的种族汇集在一起而造就出全新的每个人，他们的劳动和后代将给世界带来巨大的变化。”
他的通讯一发表，顿时，他提出的美国人的文化特征定义被所有的美国公民接受。现在，二百多年了，那个“啥人算是个美国人”的文化定义还是为所有美国公民所赞赏接受。每年美国独立日（美国国庆节）之际，那个文化定义挂起来还是新鲜、还是许多美国公民用激励自己日日更新来庆祝国庆的铭文。
中国是个自称有五千年文明历史而来的国家。我寻找全体中国人都赞同接受和年年挂起依然新鲜的“啥人才算是个中国人”的文化定义。可是，我很笨蛋，沿着五千年文明的道路来回走了两遭、也没能找到。有谁知道，请告诉我。
