【活动】诗朗诵 Sonnet 116

楼主 (文学城)

俺们刚吃上肉你们又吃菜了,俺们刚学会读诗你们又散文了,唉!

         William Shakespeare - Sonnet 116

              let me not to the marriage of true minds

               Admit impediments; love is not love

               Which alters when it alteration finds,

               Or bends with the remover to remove:

               O, no, it is an ever-fixed mark

               That looks on tempests and is never shaken;

               It is the star to every wand'ring bark,

               Whose worth's unknown, although his height be taken.

               Love's not Time's fool, though rosy lips and cheeks

               Within his bending sickle's compass come;

               Love alters not with his brief hours and weeks,

               But bears it out even to the edge of doom.

               If this be error and upon me proved,

               I never writ, nor no man ever loved.

Side note:

I first came across this poem when I was watching Did You Hear About The Morgans?  The movie, starring Sarah Jessica Parker and Hugh Grant, tells about a couple whose marriage on the brink of divorce eventually finds its way to safe harbor.

In the movie, estranged SJP and Hugh Grant are sent to Wyoming in a witness protection program.  In this remote rural place where time is almost still, they gradually recollect the magic that had gotten them together years ago.

One clear starry night, SJP is so awed by the sky that she recites Shakespeare's Sonnet 116 --- which is her wedding vow.  Hugh Grant listens in and jokes “Was Shakespeare at our wedding? “ Then he starts to recite his vow.

Being a 理工呆鸟,I had no clue then what Shakespeare was talking about. It was Grant's original and modern words, along with his charming voice, that stroke my heart.  But after the movie, I tried to plow through Sonnet 116 line by line (which is really hard for me), and was deeply moved by it. I'd like to dedicate my reading to all couples in mysj, wishing your ever-fixed love guiding you through tempests, labyrinth, all kinds of ups and downs, even to the edges of doom.

Grant’s vow:

Grant’s vow:

I promise never to take you for granted

Or utter a word unkind

Never allow my affections to be recanted

Or stop marveling at your behind

To also marvel at your warmth

Your wit, your refusal to condone animal slaughter

Your wisdom, your laugh, your inability to boil water

To be your best friend for the rest of my life

And to thank the God you are not sure about

For fooling you into being my wife.
