Alzheimer's disease can be inherited from either parent, but the risk may be higher if it's inherited from the mother:
Genetics
People inherit one copy of the APOE gene from each parent. Inheriting at least one copy of the APOE e4 allele from either parent increases the risk of developing Alzheimer's disease. Inheriting two copies, one from each parent, increases the risk even more.
Family history
People with first-degree relatives who have Alzheimer's disease are four to 10 times more likely to develop the disease themselves.
Maternal inheritance
Some studies suggest that the chances of inheriting Alzheimer's disease are higher from the mother than the father. For example, one study found that people with a mother who had Alzheimer's disease had twice as much gray matter shrinkage as those with a father or no parent with Alzheimer's.
While genetics is a factor in Alzheimer's disease, there are many other risk factors that can contribute to the disease, including behaviors and habits. Some of these risk factors can be changed to potentially reduce a person's risk of cognitive decline.
