today we have 50 patients, compared to 33 last week and 17 two weeks ago. Five of these patients are in the intensive care unit, three are on ventilators, and one of these patients is on ECMO. Eighteen of our hospitalized patients are fully vaccinated, and two are partially vaccinated. We are seeing many patients hospitalized with COVID, not for COVID. That is, they are admitted for a scheduled procedure, surgery, an injury or treatment of another illness, and we discover through routine testing of all admitted patients that they are positive. This is why is so important that all patient care employees wear appropriate PPE. Two patients hospitalized for COVID died in the past week.

We conducted approximately 1,000 COVID tests yesterday, including more than 700 in our Little Rock drive-thru testing site. Thirty-eight percent of the 900+ tests conducted in house were positive.

Pre-Procedure Testing – ALL patients will require a negative PCR test within 72 hours of their scheduled procedure beginning tomorrow (Jan. 6). Patients who do not complete this testing should expect to have their procedure rescheduled. Day-of testing will not be available.
Patient Delay after Positive Test – Patients who test positive for COVID must continue to wait 21 days before rescheduling clinic appointments, imaging and other procedures, other than therapy for COVID.

Preventive Monoclonal Antibody Treatment Now Available for Immunocompromised Patients – UAMS has a limited number of Evusheld treatments in stock. This is a combination of two monoclonal antibodies, which the FDA approved earlier this month under Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) as a pre-exposure prophylaxis to prevent COVID-19 in adults and children 12 and older who have compromised immune systems or a history of severe adverse reactions to a COVID-19 vaccine.
Oral Therapy for COVID – Two drugs, Paxlovid and Molnupiravir, have been approved under EUA for treatment of mild to moderate infections of COVID. We have a limited supply of Paxlovid and are prescribing it to high-risk patients.
