方格子as in 格物 is a concept as noble as any other more abstract ones. I actually think it is nobler since you can see a full history in it while the more abstract ones are just landmarks in this history.
自然之物是不規則形,人的思維以邏輯思辨、語言概念使之"方格化",以便掌握和運用,有點像微積分最初的方法,即把不规则形用很多小正方形拼凑出來。
但衹能對物(語言、概念也是物)方能如此,所以說格物而不說格人、格心。
語言、數學、科學的産生過程也是格化的過程。思想也是。
品格、格鬥之格是引申義或遷移義。來自上述"格化"中的"分""切""辨别"的涵義,相當於英語的"distinguish"。
