非常优秀的同学竞争老师的关注,实际上是很累的,所以这方面取舍不是没有意义的。再比如为了在下沉领域创业,往排名高的学校读,完全可以靠炒作毕业学校完成冷启动,当然后面怎么维持知名度做好事业也还是要看各自能力,靠炒学校知名度和蹭校友关系,其实又避开了完全的学业上的竞争,这就是不同的路线带来的成本取向的不同。总之还是那个话,不同的路,规划是有不同,没有哪个学校是对特定孩子样样都好的。
我儿子一年级第一学期线代TA 的印度研究生,第一次习题课讲了五个问题,有二个完全是错的,他一小时的课我儿子十分钟就可以做完,我儿子每次考试都是满分,学期总评99, 印度TA 也许能评A, 但他大考不可能考80 分以上,他最后一题是没能力做的。
那个领域的专著确实大量就是录的这位大牛的论文,不过专业课也不是这个讲法,好点的学生自学一下很Ok,但是后半段的学生真是学的痛苦吃力收获又少。这种教授的态度其实就是真的只care单独指导的学生。搞科研没得说,普教对志不在此的学生意义不大。

哈哈,自己不牛,但很多牛同学。我当年的同学两人毕业后没有几年就财务自由了,一个进了start up,一个(我们实验室师兄)和我导师开公司,公司后来被收购了。还有很多professor,一双手数不过来。
看来NYU不够出名啊,研究生才如此不抗打吧?!
当年读研的时候也有这么一门课,教授两小时面对黑板嘀嘀咕咕,我基本上一个完整句子也没听明白过。(当然我英文听力也很差。)但是他那个方向的文章里定理公式全是他的名字。有师兄说,能听懂他说话的话,其实他讲得特别好。
圪塔本科不好进。里面就是legacy,如果不是特大户,一般学习不差。牛鬼蛇神还是少数。圪塔凭着地理优势,大大的招研究生印钞票,这并不是近几年的事,一直都有。
他数学不如你儿子好,我不奇怪。
应该问题不大,那科研强的教授就是更需要的资源:)
大学很多教授,其实除了教书,什么研究都不搞。
按这个只能评出最好的师范学院,而不是最强的科研。看科研,就要看一是诺贝尔的数量,另外一个是专利的数量。

我后来还去上过几节P的一个undergraduate upper level course. 一位短访的Fields Medalist 讲,他讲的内容和别人不一样,非常漂亮,但也非常难。 这种课其他地方找不到啊。

别说冷门不好找工作的专业,读研比例相当高,就是CS专业,不甘于技术含量低工作的真心喜欢CS的学生有相当一部分往上读。
功利心重,受环境影响,追求高薪的学生是很多,但不能因此就看不到有其他追求的学生,低谷好学校的研。
UCS 的研究型MS很难申请。
