Seattle Deputy Fire Chief died after falling down a steep hillside, report finds
CLIFFDELL, Wash. - The Kittitas County Coroner's Office says Seattle Deputy Fire Chief Jay Schreckengost died from injuries sustained in a fall.
A forensic examination found numerous injuries including a broken wrist and spine. Investigators believe he fell down a steep hillside or cliff multiple times.
On Friday, Schreckengost was transported home to Seattle by members of the Seattle Fire Department in Fire Department vehicles.
There was snow on the ground on Nov. 2, the morning Schreckengost went scouting for Elk, creating slick conditions in an already rugged and dangerous terrain.
The location where he was found was near the bottom of a sharp slope about 700 feet in elevation near Cliffdell. Investigators believe Schreckengost fell down part of the slope and could not climb back up.
Another fall brought him near the bottom of the slope, causing a fatal spinal fracture.
Mountain Rescue Teams from Seattle, Tacoma, Everett, and the Olympic and Central Mountain Rescue Teams found his body on Nov. 14.
