OTTAWA — Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says he believes a “confluence of events” that includes the COVID-19 pandemic and a more aggressive China on the world stage are contributing to rising rates of anti-Asian racism in Canada.
“First of all, there’s always been intolerance in Canada, even in an extraordinary country that is proud of diversity being a source of strength and proud of our multicultural nature,” Trudeau said in a lengthy interview with Peter Mansbridge, the former CBC national news anchor, that aired on Sirius XM radio Wednesday.
“I think there is a…confluence of events that include a more assertive and aggressive China on the world stage, combined with a global pandemic that had its origins in China, that is putting extra pressure on the Chinese- Canadian community, and on Asian Canadians in general, in ways that are quite frankly unacceptable.”
