We have heard many reports/news saying that COVID patients died during sleep, even with their family members at home. So I am not surprised that two of them died in the same night by coincidence. The police are professionals, they should be able to tell, by smell, if there was a gas leak. The possibility for them to die from 酗酒吸毒 while quarantined with symptoms is not too high. So without further information, I believe they just died from covid.

As I said more than once, I have my parents and about twenty uncles and aunts here, mostly in Cal, who are seniors, and I don't want to lose any one of them. Hopefully we can take advantage of the coming summer and minimize, if not eradicate, the virus, but I am not very optimistic about it. Once the numbers are down, we ease up things and give the virus another chance to proliferate. It is kind of like you are choking someone to kill him/her, but before s/he dies, you free him/her. Then once s/he get the strength, you choke him/her again. You can never kill that person that way.
