1. do not cash the check... 2. open a IRA account with whichever company you choose 3. tell them you need to rollover a 401k check to the IRA account and ask them for instruction 4. make sure to tell them you want this to be a non-taxable event

good catch... i forgot to mention that - have to be traditional IRA.
The reason why i don't like the current 401k is that employer typically only have a small selection of the funds you can choose to invest in. If IRA, you have a lot more selections

你不可以cash，把这个钱rollover到你现在的account里面，直接把支票寄过去就好了，填个rollover的表。
否则年底要补税和罚金的。

my current employer doesn't have all the selections... only some Fidelity, and some Vanguard funds.
I like to be in control of my investments, that is why I rollover to the tranditional IRA every time I change employers
