Every one makes mistakes. Why not feeling high seeing ways to improve? I was in such doomed spirit a lot during my PhD (especially after some harsh talk with the boss). Really regret the lovely days I missed. Wish I could sit with you for coffee/tea or play tennis in the bright sun now. It's beautiful spring time. Take your boss for example. The impression you gave him is what you can really work on. What impression / words that you wish him have in the letter? Hard-working, self-driven, faster learner? All you can demonstrate in front of him.
And he of course knows that everyone makes mistakes. If he take one mistake and deny your merits, it's his mistake. :P
It doesn't matter how difficult the process (PhD) is--most likely everyone experiences different difficulties. The result matters. Focus on the result, don't let the small stones keep your feet of the track.

if you want to have a SG, work hard to get him, learn what he likes, shape your body, study his interests, get a good hair cut, a good picture of yours. find good outfit... so many things you can do...
nowadays, i bet, girls dont give out pictures with glasses to guys they would like to date..
