Bistro Les Amis

The modern -

places like Daniel and Per se are actually quite local. Because it typically takes 2 months to reserve, it's hard for people outside the city to schedule. I don't think that I talked about Sushi a lot? I don't mind including Sushi though...as supposed to Chinese food.

我也来跟个吧,midtown east 的L'Entrecote,一个很小很cute的店面,像个hole in the wall。我和ld猜是family run, wife cooks and husbands serves.

20 per person?

tapas? I need to try it out. thanks for sharing

if you enjoy local food, I highly recommend this little book
http://www.amazon.com/Historic-Shops-Restaurants-York-Establishments/dp/1892145154

it's a good guidebook for historic restaurants and shops, many of which started as pushcarts, or are owned by the offspring of the 1st generation immigrant from Europe in the early 1900s, and are still open after years of ups and downs.

I like the food, and most of the places are unpretentious, but my favorite part is "tasting" the story of a family business, but that's just be me. I guess that's touristy too in a way.

Craft。

Locanda Verde
Verdict: casual fine dining - casual and cool environment; fine food
Rating: Above Babbo, right below Del Posto (so far the No.1 Italian restaurant in NYC, in our humble list)

Reservation is highly recommended unless you don't mind sitting at the bar.
BREAD
Very soft Foccacia bread. The surface was perfectly browned and the top was covered with delicious olive oil. It was not so dense to give you a pizza crust kind of taste, but rather airy and it would melt in your mouth. They added some lemon flavor on the surface (not sure how) and the dough had a little more sugar than the average foccacia. The end result was extremely pleasant. We asked for two "refills".

CICCHETTI
Sheeps' Milk Ricotta with sea salt and herbs

Solid, not as amazing as the sliders...but it grew on us. will order again.

Blue Crab crostino with jalepenos and tomato

Melted in my mouth...loved the kick from the jalepeno...could be even better if they minced the jalepeno and mixed with the crab meat, but that would be too similar to Del Posto's crab (spaghetti).

ANTIPASTI
Lamb Meatball sliders with caprino and cucumber

Loved it. Very impressive. Wow.

Tripe alla Parmigiana with a fried organic egg

I could have been much happier if they reduced the portion of the tripe. The egg was a tiny bit overcooked but I understood why they would add the fried egg with the Tripe...the mixture tastes very different from the tripe alone. The tripe was perhaps a little overcooked as well. In fact, it would be perfect if they reduced the tripe component to half and cooked it 10% less. Then the texture of the tripe would stand out more and the proportion with the runny eggs would be just right.

The tomato sauce was delicious. I used the remaining foccacia bread to absorb all of it.

PASTA
My Grandmothers' Ravioli

Delicious although the tomato sauce might have overwhelmed the ravioli slightly.

Pumpkin Agnolotti with brown butter, sage and amaretti

Executed extremely well. It's rare to eat un-delicious pumpkin ravioli in a restaurant, but what made those dumplings different were the tiny nutty flavored pieces on the top. Perhaps they were tiny pieces of almond? The texture was a contrast of the crispy nuts and melt-in-your mouth ravioli. And the nuts brought out the nutty flavor of the pumpkin even more. The only minor complaint was on the butter sage sauce - it was perhaps a little too salty. The dumplings alone were just perfect.

SECONDI
Too full to eat any more. Leave room for dessert.

DOLCE
Pistachio Brown Butter Cake
The cake was too dry. The texture needs to be improved, but it was delicious nonetheless.
Maple Budino
It is supposed to be one of the "top ten" dishes in NYC (per Times magazine?) and it deserves it. It's a brilliant dessert dish. The candied pecans contrasted with the silky custard. Whatever they used for the custard has a nutty flavor too (maple syrup?) and it was totally enhanced by the pecans even more. The sorbetto was strong and sour (in a good way, IMHO) and it brightened the dish in a great deal.

It was a very happy and satisfying meal. The environment is very casual and it feels that the kitchen keeps cooking those popular appetizers so they come very quickly. We finished the food in an hour and half, which was amazingly fast. It's a place to share and it will be appropriate for a business meal too. I highly recommend it.
