I am a long time J.Crew shopper and over the past 2-3 years have probably averaged like $800-$1k/month, which seems on a par with what other people on this blog spend. I cut way back earlier this fall when it was clear our economy was going nowhere good. I've had my eye on a few things though, so I went in this weekend to take advantage of the sale. When I was ready to check out with about $700 worth of stuff, I got a hard time about (1) even requesting to use my student discount along with the additional % off (how was I supposed to know policy had changed) and (2) making a $30 return. Yes, I had the receipt, but it was over 60 days - I specifically requested that the return just be credited towards my purchase (i.e., store credit). Well, the SA said they couldn't give me any $ back, and I'm not one to fight, but I merely pointed out the language on the sign right in front of me that said I could get store credit. He was clearly not happy, and got the manager, who also was not happy and deliberated right in front of me with another manager about whether to allow the return. I'm fairly non-confrontational, so I decided to leave rather than push the issue. Long story short, they lost a $700 sale (probably would have been about $500 with discounts) over a 15% promotion and a $30 return. They also left me with a bad taste in my mouth from being treated like a criminal for wanting to make a return.
