The short answer is yes. Now allow me to share the long version... Nearly four years ago I listened to a presentation by Marc Levitan, director of LSU's Hurricane Center, at a meeting of the Houston chapter of the American Meteorological Society. Using computer flooding models, he described the very scenario that has just played out in New Orleans. I decided to write this story, which begins with a FEMA anecdote:
New Orleans is sinking. And its main buffer from a hurricane, the protective Mississippi River delta, is quickly eroding away, leaving the historic city perilously close to disaster. So vulnerable, in fact, that earlier this year the Federal Emergency Management Agency ranked the potential damage to New Orleans as among the three likeliest, most catastrophic disasters facing this country. The other two? A massive earthquake in San Francisco, and, almost prophetically, a terrorist attack on New York City. The New Orleans hurricane scenario may be the deadliest of all.
I took the FEMA information from one of the slides of Levitan's presentation, and later called him to verify this and other information for the story. It was published Dec. 1, 2001. Fast forward 45 months. Bloggers, reporters and even aides to U.S. Senators have seized upon this story, asking me for a copy of the FEMA information. I don't have one. My notes from the time period are gone. About five weeks after I wrote the story, I was drafted to cover Enron's bankruptcy case. This two-plus year effort covering the most Byzantine bankruptcy case ever consumed all of my time, energies and reporting efforts. I asked Levitan yesterday if he remembers the FEMA bit, and he does. Levitan said he first heard it second-hand from Walter Maestri, director of Emergency management in Jefferson Parish. Levitan said the Director of FEMA, Joe Allbaugh, told a group of New Orleans area emergency managers, including Maestri, about the three likely catastrophes at the conclusion at a small meeting during the National Hurricane Conference in April, 2001. Levitan said he heard the same thing from a FEMA speaker at conference later that summer. Allbaugh's official remarks from the conference do not mention the scenarios. Then, this story appeared in the Los Angeles Times yesterday.
U.S. Geological Survey seismologist Lucy Jones remembers attending an emergency training session in August 2001 with the Federal Emergency Management Agency that discussed the three most likely catastrophes to strike the United States. First on the list was a terrorist attack in New York. Second was a super-strength hurricane hitting New Orleans. Third was a major earthquake on the San Andreas fault.
I contacted Jones this morning, and she verified the account. She added that two other scenarios were also under consideration in August, 2001: a major hurricane striking Miami and a long-term, Dust-Bowl type drought. I have shared all of this information with FEMA. Some of you, in comments and e-mails, have suggested it might be in FEMA's political interest to stifle such a report or comments by its top officials, but I believe if they have the original source, they will share it. Whether or not a formal report was ever written, it's safe to say FEMA officials were very concerned about a New Orleans strike, and were all-too-prophetic. I also believe, after the Sept. 11 attacks, all of this work on natural disasters got set aside in favor of a focus on terrorist attacks.

i've decided to go to the zoo tomorrow to observe animals.
i think it's a good idea.

thanks for reminding. so tomorrow's route is zoo first, costco second.
don't forget to buy bulk canned food and water from costco too...
am i too nervous?

should be helpful

During an Earthquake:
Indoors
Remain Calm
Drop, Cover and Hold under sturdy desk or table
If there's no cover near, drop near interior wall and cover head and neck, stay away from windows, glass and objects that might fall
Outdoors
Remain Calm- if you are driving it may seem as if you have a flat tire
Move to a clear area away from power lines, trees, vehicles, street signs and other objects that may fall or move
If driving, stop and pull over in clear area, put parking brake on- Do not stop on or underneath a bridge

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~每年都是这样把
我原来以为SF会凉快,没想到这里竟然和palo alto一样热,还让不让人活了?
如果去旅游的话,哪种emergency kit比较好啊
我们家附近有鸟深更半夜叫得挺欢,听上去好几只的样子,这个现象已经有一段时间了。因为这是我们第一年住在现在的地方,所以不知道往年就这样,还是今年是个特殊情况。
有达人知道吗,有没有什么鸟这个季节喜欢在夜里叫?是正常现象吗?我老怀疑是地震前兆。
我LG当时也这么猜测的
你还挺注意营养的, 美国哪有压缩饼干卖啊, 我得买点存着
食物和饮料之类的东西据说够2个人吃6天的.
不过要真是很全的Emergency Kit, COSTCO都在100块钱左右. 想想一个人最起码需要3套,家里,车上和办公室里,那两个人加起来光买这个就要
500哦..
地震来之前,总会有各种异常现象出现,天气异常变热便是地震的主要预兆之一。
不得不防啊!
