Jacklyn Gise was born on Dec. 29, 1946, in Washington, D.C., to Lawrence Preston Gise and Mattie Louise (Strait) Gise. She grew up in Albuquerque, where her father was a regional director of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission. As a high school student, she dated a senior at the same school, Ted Jorgensen, and through him became pregnant with her first child, Jeffrey Preston Jorgensen, in 1963, when she was 16 years old.
She and Ted married months before Jeff was born, but they divorced two years later, and she raised their child as a single mother. At her and her father’s request, Mr. Jorgensen agreed not to be a part of his son’s life, according Jeff Bezos’ biographer Brad Stone, in his book “The Everything Store: Jeff Bezos and the Age of Amazon” (2013). “Being pregnant in high school was not popular in Albuquerque in 1964. It was difficult for her,” Mr. Bezos said in a congressional hearing in 2020. His mother’s school tried to kick her out at first, but her father negotiated with the principal to allow her to finish high school. She was not allowed to walk on the stage to get her diploma, Mr. Bezos said. Ms. Bezos then enrolled in night school and got a job at a bank. Mr. Bezos said his mother had picked courses with professors who let her bring a baby to class. “She would show up with two duffel bags — one full of textbooks, and one packed with diapers, bottles and anything that would keep me interested and quiet for a few minutes,” he said. She met Mike Bezos, an immigrant from Cuba, in Albuquerque, and they married in 1968. They had two children, Christina and Mark. Mr. Bezos adopted Jeff. https://www.nytimes.com/2025/08/14/obituaries/jackie-bezos-dead.html
