Dachau was located near Munich in southern Germany. It was initially intended for political opponents of the Nazi regime, such as communists and social democrats. Over time, it became a model for the broader Nazi concentration camp system, expanding to include Jews, Roma (Gypsies), Jehovah’s Witnesses, homosexuals, and others targeted by Nazi ideology.
