I had a friend whose older daughter went to Yale and later attended Johns Hopkins for medical school. The mother is a biomedical engineer, and the father is a biostatistician—both faculty members at The Ohio State University. The older daughter graduated from a public school, at 16, and the younger one, who is a year older than my own daughter, switched to a local private school in fourth grade. These stories inspired a new initiative at our school. We’re launching a zero-interest student loan program for after-school math education. While the funding may be modest, we hope it sends a strong message of support and encourages others to help students like her. The program will involve an application and selection process, similar to our Need-Based Financial Aid program. I’ve invited the family to apply and offered for their younger child to be the first participant in this program. We will cover her after-school math education for the next four years as long as the loan is repaid when they’re able. The student doesn’t need to enroll in our classes—she can choose any program she feels most comfortable with. We also acknowledged that they know their children better than anyone else, so they are the best people to guide her with the decision. One of my collaborators—formerly a dean at the University of Notre Dame—once told me that children of faculty members there could attend any private school and still receive the same tuition benefits. 你是GT毕业的吗?我们也倾向于GT,觉得为了一个名不值得付几十万块钱,可又怕以后会后悔。
就业并没有考虑那么多。孩子将来暑假肯定回家附近的诊所实习。
有人想花几十万买个名都买不到呢。
是啊,所以才纠结。怕得是买的是个虚名,最后又没啥用。身边有朋友为了BU砸锅卖铁的,所以想反省一下是不是太后爹后妈了。
为什么是坑?我怎么觉得挺真的呢。有钱肯定去yale,但没钱需要卖房,后面还有一个小的,确实得考虑一下吧。医学院没那么快回本的,但本科学校也对医学院申请有影响。yale的名字在那呢。
可能我不小心挡了他的路了吧。
你家里钱很多么?付几十万的学费吃力么? 普通中产的话,无脑full ride GT 啊

要进医学院无脑选Yale 美国名牌医学院录取最多的学校学生就是harvard Yale,一个名牌医学院25%是哈佛耶鲁的学生,只要你MCAT GPA不差,医学院稳进 我从来没听说过GT有很多人进医学院 如果不读医学院那就进GT,因为大部分专业只看实力,跟大学排名没多大关系
让娃自己计划一下,以后医学院需要爹妈掏钱吗?要是爹妈掏,你现在掏了以后还掏的出吗?如果他自己打算贷款(医生贷款好像利息很低),那么这次支持他家里要卖房子,问他是否愿意他工作的时候资助弟弟/妹妹 学费的一半 给你?要是不肯,那么就full ride吧,白眼狼不能养。如果他愿意,我觉得好孩子应该支持去yale。
牛蛙可能去斯坦福可能就跟几个同学创业搞了startup被大厂收购,现在已经财务自由了,然后作为founder在搞第二个startup,hire了几大牛PhD给自己打工。这两个地方能遇到的同学,对世界的vision都不一样

GT的cs,航天等专业很棒,不过医学院肯定是Y的几率大增。医学不同专业之间差别太大了,贷款那点钱啥也不是。

确实如此。
自住房就别卖了。投资房舍不得卖就有点眼光不够了。我是孩子的话,看你这么纠结肯定自己会提出来全程贷款。几十万贷款加医学院几十万,大约一百多万,期间他们还会到处旅游,但是都信心满满,进了诊所能挣大钱的,这种体验也是买不到的。
同学的质量也天差地远,GT一起学CS刷题的同学肯定有的是,intern进大厂的志同道合的有的是,但是能最后进顶流医学院的就不多了。
怎么说呢,恭喜加羡慕了!
好几家医学院全面免费了,可以拼一下进这几所免费的,也是一个思路
恭喜恭喜🎊🎈录取大藤, 首选Yale , 两校差别挺大的。我也在选Dartmouth 部分学费和Rice full ride 之间纠结, 因为这两个学校差别不突出。

说顶尖本科、顶尖医学院和普校没差别的, 不对
这个娃是扶弟模么,没觉得这种选择是明智的。 没看最近国内的新闻有即便是 top 2 或top 985 的硕博第一关就被刷掉,因为第一学历不行, 如果说高中毕业时够不着 T5 那就罢了“继续努力”,够着了为省点学费去差很远的学校将会是一辈子的遗憾。
况且 T5 给 FA 是给力的,我们这有单收入家庭20万出头,ABC 孩子去 T5 比本州大没多多少钱,比某些外州大公立还便宜,小孩在校内打工每年都挣万把块,三年级就找到很好的实习,进到T5所接触的人和眼界提高及初始找工的资源优势是金不换的
要看你的娃有多大的potential,如果自信去yale能继续在top,那去yale;如果不能,去GT

这不是一个档次的学校啊。。。
总体去Yale拿高GPA会比GT容易 因为班更小,而且好多藤校有GPA Inflation 藤校本科是重点呵护对象,能打高分都打高分,premed会没这么累 毕竟金主的孩子 GPA要够好看 才能去top医法商学院和花街 GT是公立学校人太多了,稍微火点的专业upper level的课没这么多位置 所以大一大二很多除草课,故意搞得很难 这是旗舰公立学校普遍的特点 私立学校人少班小,是不用除草的
UCI 除了钱 还有什么优待?
绝大多数去斯坦福的,最后出来也是打工。搞startup的大多做不下去,哪来那么多被收购的。何况我亲戚这孩子立志进学术圈。
确实想让人问问是不是亲生的。
斯坦福的创业氛围是全国最浓的,没有之一 即便是走学术圈,跟UCI比也是碾压,斯坦福教授的connection都不是一个级别的
我看一些州大医学院毕业的一样去好的专科,去GT如果能拔尖以后机会还是很多的
如果你去GT还担心除草课,那这孩子的potential也一般吧,因为去州大的学生素质还是比藤校的差一些吧 藤校学生素质还是要高一些吧,想top不容易吧

嗯,相比马公圈医生圈,学术圈可能是更在乎学校牌子的
那位层主举得例子也有些奇怪,从姐弟两的学校推测肯定是加州娃, 申请 UCI 不可能没申请 UC 那前几个,被斯坦福录取而前几个 UC 一个未录直接掉到 UCI 这概率很低
这话是用于父母对申请不顺利的孩子开导的,不是孩子申到耶鲁以后用的。
我美本是top私校,后面在UC也上过除草课,UC的除草课比小藤的课累很多 累的原因不是难度的问题,而是能出现各种故意搞得很刁钻的内容,为除草而除草 藤校甚至能出现一门课多数人都是A的情况,公立学校的成绩A B C和fail是卡死了百分比的 还有来自于老师的support也不一样,旗舰公立平时只能见得到TA,TA也就是master/phd学生 很多TA水平比本科生也好不了多少,藤校可以大佬教授手把手指导,因为班够小对学生了解,看你认真努力就算考试考的不太行,可能给点努力分给你提一档成绩,教授够了解你 给推荐信也容易拿到强推 找教授做research也容易些。推荐信 GPA这些对申请医学院都是决定性因素,所以大家才说premed建议Yale

医生跟医生的差别大了去了。
我美本是美东的私校,毕业之后考虑premed去UC上过除草课,由于UC体验太差了所有我又回私校上完了剩下的premed课
以后的事以后再说,顾虑太多只能在家躺着了
我同事的孩子也是去yale,然后医学院,心血管手术specialty,出来就是40w。疫情前。现在不知道了,因为他一执业他爸爸(我同事)就退休了。那时候同事还抱怨说yale一年7万压力好大。后来没想到还能提早退休。
你的情况也许比较特殊?如果想上课又easy又能拿高分,可以考虑去其他的二档的私校,费用也低一些
耶鲁更大的风险是自己改主意不学premed 了。因为学校太好各种方向机会太多。真想学医坚持就是了。80-90%申请的人都能进医学院。 这么一说,去GT可能到最后也不学医。因为GT就不是premed学校。到时候可能就改学CS工程去了。
想学医,这话好像说反了。去Y机会更大。
GT给full ride说明lz家娃是硬核娃,学习的硬实力已经有了,现在最需要的是大学在软实力上继续培养。这点上Y完胜GT。

问题在于金主的孩子也不学医,基本都去学预法了。预医那些除草课,藤校也一样不好读。当然最后被除草机会小很多,但是也得考虑从一开始这一班的学生水平都很强。
唉,有人问,人家答了。然后被说没意义……这种伤人的回复也确实只有批马甲才说吧。
金主的孩子学医的太多了啊,金主自己很多都是医生,私立藤校是很想让学生进入top医法商学院的,打分很generous,一个班都很强那就一个班都高分呗。公立旗舰一个班几百个人,教授都脸盲了 他为什么要care

S有A+ GPA 4.3,大公校最多是A GPA 4.0 你猜人家医学院选学生的时候更愿意要公校 GPA 4.0 还是S GPA 4.0 的学生?
医学院申请不算4.3, 都按4.0算。S的4.0肯定更值钱。

就知道来问这种问题的基本心里已经想好了。不过‘不是特别聪明’的准备去上GT? 还预医?你确定就好啊。

去州大还有一个好处是可以转很多的AP课,然后可以集中精力准备考MCAT和其他学医的EC

你看见州大转了一堆AP还上了医学院的来介绍经验。 谁都知道不能这样。必须在本校老老实实过除草课。暑假也千万别想去CC或者更差的学校读有机化学。医学院啥不懂啊。

想到隔壁贴说华人有钱也不快乐,这个贴大概能reflect一些。Yale要全款说明楼主家有这个钱,所谓卖房应该是投资房,开开心心去top5的事情,搞到为了钱放弃。而且楼主还说高中鸡飞狗跳,说明你们还是鸡娃父母,那么鸡了半天最后又不去,我要是你家娃估计都会困惑我父母究竟expect我啥?
最后劝一句吧,不是自推型的,更不该去大公校卷,Yale的life会容易多了
可以转其他的AP课,你去疙瘩上还得上core,有些实在没有必要
就为了你感兴趣,公共网络上别人说句没意思都不行,你管得真够宽啊
premed用AP抵学分?你这是学术性自杀,跟医学院永别的程度 AP比intro课简单太多了,intro没上好到高阶的ochem Biochem molecular之类的课能集体跪,而且还是大公立卷飞了的地方 而且很多医学院不接受premed用AP抵的学分,很多也不接受cc的学分,医学院又不傻
去 Y 学习压力才会小。
