Dear MIT alumni, I write to you now because no one understands the value of MIT better than you do – and because, as I explain below, the Institute needs your help now, in a new way.
The MIT you remember You remember professors who came to class fresh from redefining the frontiers of their fields. You remember how MIT’s hands-on style of education – from UROPs to robots – taught you real-world skills the way no lecture alone ever could. You remember the power of sharing classes and labs and psets with brilliant friends from everywhere, and every background. You understand MIT’s value as a source of innovators and innovations. You know the pride you feel in hearing about new MIT discoveries and inventions – and you know the respect you command when people recognize your Brass Rat.
Current and growing threats Unfortunately, significant changes in US federal policies – some already imposed, some threatened – are interfering with the normal functioning of MIT, diminishing our ability both to serve the nation and to attract the world’s finest talent. And as we’re seeing, these changes are doing harm to colleges and universities across the country.
At MIT, these changes have already necessitated budget cuts across every office and department, hiring freezes and layoffs, and a 13% drop in the number of graduate students we were able to admit to research programs. We anticipate further cuts. And of course, impacts like these, and others, are damaging peer institutions too – the broad research ecosystem that spurs breakthrough discoveries.
Our community includes a wide range of political views, as it should. I don’t expect we would all agree on the ideal contours of the future of higher education, or even of MIT.
But I have to believe that we all agree it should have a future – a thriving future.
A host of actions aimed at all of higher education may jeopardize that future:

• Budget and staffing cuts across all federal agencies, limiting the flow of current research grants, with much deeper cuts coming.
• A large proposed reduction in the government’s share of so-called indirect costs, which in fact cover indispensable things – buildings, labs, data storage, biosafety and more – that make all our research possible. We have already filed suits against two agencies to halt this change.
• Policy changes, including unexplained visa revocations, that will undermine MIT’s ability to attract the very best talent from around the world.
• And, perhaps most serious of all, proposals in Congress to exponentially hike the tax on revenues from our educational endowment – an enduring resource built over generations by individual gifts from MIT alumni and friends like you. If enacted, the most aggressive of these proposals would cost MIT hundreds of millions of dollars every year. That’s a tax on student financial aid, on research, on innovation and on MIT’s overall capacity to serve America.
Together, actions like these will erode MIT’s strength. The long-term damage will limit MIT’s potential discoveries, innovations and cures – and deny the country the benefit of the students we can no longer educate.
What you can do now
If you’re concerned about this potential damage to America’s economy, competitiveness and global leadership in science and innovation, we ask our alumni in the US to reach out now to your senators and your representative in Congress to let them know your views on endowment taxes and other policies.
You can find a complete set of tools and bullet points here to make it simple and quick to share your views. (Infinite Connection login required)
Phone calls to congressional offices can be even more effective than emails.
This website can help you to help others understand MIT.
Contacting your representatives in Washington is the most important step, but you may also want to post on social media a quick, informal video of yourself describing how MIT helped create opportunities for you and in turn helped you do good for others.
If you work in an industry or company that depends on MIT talent or technology, please consider seeing if your sector or business could advocate for MIT and other research institutions that together serve as the R&D arm for many industries.
Regardless of where you stand on current political issues, I hope you will help policymakers understand the intrinsic and lasting value of MIT – for the students we educate and for the health, prosperity and security of the nation.
Sincerely,
Sally Kornbluth

MIT put together this useful website : https://alum.mit.edu/volunteer/legislative-advocacy-network
Also :
If you work in an industry or company that depends on MIT talent or technology, please consider seeing if your sector or business could advocate for MIT and other research institutions that together serve as the R&D arm for many industries.

Can''''t let this go down without a good fight !

“advocate for MIT and other research institutions that together serve as the R&D arm for many industries.”
