Genius

Richard Duffin was an American physicist and professor of mathematics at Carnegie Mellon University. He is known for his invaluable contributions to electrical transmission theory and geometric programming. While teaching at Carnegie Mellon, Prof. Duffin met a young student who was very much inclined towards pursuing a career in mathematics. He was a bright fellow who received admission with a full Scholarship. Assessing his talent, Prof. Duffin decided to become his advisor and under his guidance, the boy completed his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in mathematics at the age of twenty. He wanted to earn his PhD and approached Prof. Duffin to write down a letter of recommendation to Princeton. To his request, the professor obliged and wrote down a letter of recommendation for his application to Princeton. The letter of recommendation was remarkably precise and read just one line, “He is a mathematical genius”. With this recommendation, he was accepted into Princeton with a fellowship and earned his PhD at the age of twenty-two. The ‘mathematical genius’ recommended by Prof. Duffin was the great mathematician John Nash. In 1994, Forty-four years after obtaining his PhD, he received the Nobel Prize in Economics for his remarkable contribution to analysing equilibrium in the field of non-cooperative games, popularly known as the Nash equilibrium. https://medium.com/@geet.amrit1992/the-mathematical-genius-f5e3dce62dc
