Ron and Nellie Biles are the parents who raised Olympic gymnast and national treasure Simone Biles. They supported her interest and later career in gymnastics, cheered her from the sidelines, and stood behind her in her ambitions. However, they are not her birth parents. Ron is her biological grandfather. According to NBC, Biles was born to Ron’s daughter, Shanon Biles. Shanon struggled with drug and alcohol abuse, resulting in Simone and three siblings being removed from the home. From age three until six, Simone and her siblings lived in a foster home, where she has recounted looking forward to visits from her grandfather. Eventually, Ron and his wife Nellie could adopt Simone and her sister Adria, while a great-aunt adopted her other two siblings.
Shannon struggled with drug and alcohol addiction and was unable to take care of her four kids, leading Biles and her siblings to be placed in foster care. Biles spent three years in the foster care system and has since opened up about the experience. While competing on Dancing with the Stars, the gymnast recalled "always being hungry and afraid" during her time living in foster homes. "Whenever we had visits with my grandpa I was so excited," she said. "That was the person I always wanted to see walk in the foster home."
Gymnast Simone Biles has talked a lot about being adopted by her grandparents at the age of 6. Simone has two sisters, Adria and Ashley, in addition to her brother, Tevin. Despite Adria being two years younger than Simone, they are often mistaken for twins. In an op-ed for ESPN, Adria shared her experience with unsuspecting fans while supporting her sister at the 2016 Olympics. “Even in Brazil, people came up to me every day thinking I was her. They'd ask for autographs and take pictures,” she recalled. “And many times they didn't speak English so I couldn't explain that I wasn't her. They'd just say, 'Simone! Simone!' and finally I decided it was easier to just let them take a picture." Adria continued, “We do look alike, I'll give them that. But I'm about 5-foot-2. Simone is 4-foot-8. I'm a good head taller than her. When we are side by side, people can definitely tell us apart.”
