CNN报导，联邦检察官透过声明表示，舒尔特（Joshua Schulte）遭控“间谍罪、电脑骇客罪、藐视法庭罪、向联邦调查局做出虚假陈述（FBI）以及儿童色情罪”等多项罪名成立。检方求处无期徒刑，不过法官最后只判处舒尔特40年有期徒刑。
美国司法部指出，2016年11月，现年35岁的舒尔特从CIA辞职，因为不满管理层对待他的方式，2017年愤而将8761份文件交给揭密网站“维基解密”（Wikileaks），成为CIA史上最大规模的机密外洩案。他甚至将暱称为7号金库（Vault 7）的CIA骇客工具交给维基解密，这项工具可用来入侵、窃听智慧型手机。
舒尔特在2022年7月被判4项间谍罪、4项电脑骇客罪、1项对FBI说谎罪名成立，上诉都已遭到驳回。美国联邦检察官威廉斯（Damian Williams）1日表示：“舒尔特背叛了国家，犯下美国历史上最厚颜无耻、最令人髮指的间谍罪。”
另外，检察官也指控舒尔特长期收发数以千计的儿童色情图片及视频。检方调查洩密事件时，在舒尔特位于曼哈顿的公寓发现这些儿童色情图片及视频，还受到3层密码保护。
维基解密自2017年3月开始发布舒尔特外洩的机密资料，内容包括CIA如何破坏对方的电子设备及电脑网络，以监控外国政府官员及疑似激进分子等目标。
