优点:顶私确实有很多资源普通学校无法比拟的,比如直接进去NYSE玩模拟trade啊,去UN开啥会做志愿者接待各国代表之类。但这些经历有啥“干货”就见仁见智了。
缺点:主要就是穷人日子难过。他对高中的回忆就是很累很累,每天训练完出门一溜豪车都是家里的司机来接人,自己累得半死还得坐一个小时地铁回家。ex整个高中没有一个保持联系的朋友,听上去甚至就没有朋友,他的说法一是其他同学大都是从小读上来的有自己的圈子,二是其他同学觉得他一个outsider这么出色都嫉妒他??这个顶私很多著名校友,他自己也说曾经的同学现在大部分就是金融法律政治(是男校),当然这个network对他也没啥用,他跟人没联系。
是啊,而且和后面年级的申请比起来,K的工作量基本可以忽略吧,毕竟孩子小,没啥可考的。
不是很建议。第一和其他同学收入差别有些大。其次,出来不见的能上好大学。你如果纯粹为了孩子有个好的关系网拿可以送。

是这样的。有时看着好私校也有一堆上州立的,很可能是从小上的。然后这些从小上的家长,会不断被考进去的孩子的水平震惊。最后出成绩的其实很多也是后面考进去的。从小上这个事,虽然是容易,但是并不占便宜。

其实这种比例都没有意义,Trinity这种40%藤校率绝大多数都是legacy。你家娃进去了也是陪跑的。
我们去参加过招生咨询,人家明确说K这波录取基本只考虑legacy。普通家庭去机会非常小。
体育乐器牛娃也很多,比公立要卷多了,靠实力去的都是聪明的孩子,好大学录取比例有限的,所有顶私一半或接近一半去了一般的大学,考上顶私的孩子在公立突出在私立不一定厉害了

我N年前听我朋友说她亲戚也是普通中产,砸锅卖铁的送女儿去了私校,孩子受不了和同学的家境的落差,总是问父母,为什么别人家都有大豪宅和游泳池,咱家没有,到青春期时看着精神都有些不正常了。
我们收入现在不高,曾经是非常低,娃是送私立的。我们试过很多学校,公立,便宜的私立,最贵的私立。我给MM推荐去私立: 教育,老师是完全不一样的。升学是一个考虑,但是教育更是。教育不仅有数理化,文科的教育,还有接人待物,表达和性格培养。 家庭收入如果父母一直不放弃自己的努力,是会提高的。 别人开大车,我们乘纽约地铁,如果家里教育得当,孩子会更努力。关键是娃要自信,那么娃在学校学习要好,这个父母是可以帮的。 私立在小学注重性格的培养,高中再进去完全错过了最重要的教育。
现在亚裔确实越来越多了,我们town一个年级就转去了pingry四个华人孩子,他们的弟弟妹妹后来也都去了,容易很多。看看过去的大学placement和录取率,感觉如果孩子以后想学医学CS或者类似理工科学校, 比如Cornell/CMU/UIUC/Purdue,还有MIT这种硬核竞赛大学,没必要去顶级私立,只要孩子真聪明学习足够好就行。如果想去藤校学人文金融经济法律,可以去试试,学校升学指导/大学关系和校友方面有很大优势,很多毕业的孩子都去了这些学校和专业。和人打交道的行业在私立塑造的个性还是不错的。

Lawrenceville 和Pingry的细节录取标准不太一样,知道至少两个学习特别好的孩子,高中考上了Lawrenceville,但是却都被Pingry拒了,还有Millburn那个天才奥数华人牛娃,去年美国奥数国家队里最小的孩子,也被Pingry拒了.
申请到了再纠结吧。

我尊重这种想法但是完全不赞同。世界上有很多生活的方式,尤其是美国。好学区公校不但教育好,而且有各种各样家庭背景的孩子,你的孩子可以学到很多,很努力,但不孤单。
在几乎全部同学家境都比自己好的前提下,在他们父母能提供多得多的资源下,自己的一切却都要靠自己来一点点挣,而且努力一辈子也赶不上同学父母的积累。除非孩子先天非常强大,你培养的不是自信,是用来掩饰自卑的一张壳,无论这壳多么光鲜亮丽。

Pingry附近的公校估计还达不到17%吧。
你房贷开支占税后比例还是挺高的,其他只算5000是很抠很抠的,但如果还年轻,又非常想让孩子进私立,且预计几年内收入能翻番的话,可以去挤一挤,不过这几年肯定很辛苦就是了。
普通收入娃就进好公校,多攒点上大学的学费。老早的把钱都月光花在中小学顶级私立,以后真要进藤,藤的学费也很高啊。

孩子的性格培养主要的难道不是在家里吗?学校才是辅助式的吧。
我认识和接触顶级私校的家庭都是很富裕的,家庭收入50W+,还有上百万的,每年给学校捐款赞助等等。也有知道不到50W的,妈妈全职主妇,那就是跟着学校搞各种活动等等。
楼主别觉得去私校光是砸钱就行了,这么小的孩子去学校,家长的社交也是必不可少的,当然你说你完全不管这些也不是不可以。
真心觉得没必要硬撑着去私校,除非你和你家孩子性格足够强大坚韧。

学生群不一样。公立差学生多,私立好学生多,不能这么算的,比如国内重点高中和普高学生质量区别大啊,普高也可能有牛娃但比例小太多了

我作为在DC的顶私家长(我自己也是做教育咨询的)给楼主建议: 首先,要根据自己孩子的性格特点,爱好,what type of learner he/she is,来决定孩子适不适合私校。 第二,每个私校的特点,mission,教学风格都不同,进入私校后,尤其是顶级私校,要考虑的是,学校能给孩子带来什么,你孩子各方面发展的空间大吗?优势能发挥出来吗?同时,你的孩子(和家庭)又能给学校带来什么? 第三,能不能fit in(不仅是孩子,还有家长),以为在私校如果从K开始读,一路就是13年,交友圈也比较小,social也是一个要考虑的地方。我曾经见过从中国直接移民来的家庭,想办法进了纽约顶私,但是发现和人家老钱还是差距比较大(主要是家长适应不了,觉得无法融入),后来又转出来的。
我过去三年辅导过很多在DMV地区,纽约,新泽西,和波士顿地区申请顶私的家庭,这些顶私(学费4-6万多美元的)里的家庭,以DC地区为例,据我了解家庭收入大部分在50-200万美元之间,并不是大家想象的都是家族trust fund, 巨富,很多都是双职工高收入的,也有一定比例拿financial aid, 30-50万的收入有点撑,如果只有一个娃的话可能还好。
