鸦片战争之后，对中国的鸦片市场英国控制了百分之九十，美国控制了百分之十。哪怕是这百分之十也是一笔巨额财富。美国的波士顿就靠卖中国鸦片换来的钱资助警局、消防站、学校和医院的建设。
另外美国的几个名校尤其是耶鲁大学，很大一部分土地和校园开发都是靠卖中国鸦片的利润建立起来的
