July 1, 2022 Eviction Protection for Nonpayment of Rent for Low-Income Tenants Now in Effect
Are you a low-income tenant living in LA County who has been financially impacted because of COVID-19? As of July 1, 2022, low-income households in Los Angeles County will be protected from eviction for nonpayment of rent under Phase II of the County’s COVID-19 Tenant Protections Resolution. To qualify for this protection, a tenant must be unable to pay rent due on or after July 1, 2022 and their total household income must not exceed 80% of the Area Median Income (AMI). (For example, this means household income for a family of two cannot exceed $76,250, and for a family of four cannot exceed $95,300.) Tenants must also notify their landlord (English / Spanish) that they are unable to pay rent within 7 days of rent being due. In addition to nonpayment of rent eviction protections, the Resolution continues to protect tenants against evictions for most no-fault reasons, nuisance, unauthorized occupants or pet, and protects against harassment and retaliation. Additionally, the rent-increase freeze also remains in effect for rent-stabilized units and mobilehome spaces in unincorporated areas of the County through December 31, 2022. DCBA’s Housing and Tenant Protections website has helpful information on income limits, eligibility requirements, and landlord notification templates.
Wow, hahaha.
