A major shortcoming of western democratic 2-party system, I think, is likely by nature a lack of mechanism as well as proper measures to find/provide long-lasting solutions for some critical/complex systemic/long-term problems, perhaps due to many moving parts are involved and interacted simutanuously and dynamically.
Examples of these systemic/long-term problems include - gun violence, - existence of many old laws, - environmental protection, - climate change, - days/weeks-lasting flooding, - electricity power blackout, - election mechanism, - opposition politics, - widespread bushfire, and - micro-plastic pollution, in many countries including advanced econmnies.
Perhaps these problems cannot been seen when people live in simplistic society before becoming highly industrialization economy that would produce this kind of problems that are gradually reaching to an uncontrollable and sometimes damaging level.
