Direct quote: "the greatest obstacle to happiness and fulfillment for Asian Americans might be a hyper-focus on achievement to the detriment of their mental health and well-being". 但是 school related, much higher, 13.5% vs. 7.1%。 Paul Glastris, Paul is editor in chief of the Washington Monthly, a position he has held since April 2001. Dear Editor in Chief, I hope this email finds you well. I am writing because I came across an article "Asian Americans and the Pursuit of Unhappiness” published on Washington Monthly today, which is deeply disturbing for me and many of my friends who are Asian American and parents. The link is here: https://washingtonmonthly.com/2021/11/10/asian-americans-and-the-pursuit-of-unhappiness/ The article starts with the discussion of Affirmative Action, which we do not wish to take a stand here. However, the author shows no sympathy to the cases of Asian teens committing suicide, and callously attributes that solely to the teens themselves, their parents, their family, and their culture. Teen suicide is a sad, heavy, and complex topic, it is shocking to see the author just throws unfounded accusations against us Asian parents and our culture so carelessly. The author claimed in direct quote, “the greatest obstacle to happiness and fulfillment for Asian Americans might be a hyper-focus on achievement to the detriment of their mental health and well-being.” This statement is so wrong and vicious in so many ways, just to name a few: First, this statement itself is full of stereotype bias against Asian teenagers and their parents. I personally know many Asian kids with diverse interests in sports and music besides achieving great school work, some of them aspiring to become rap singers. If anything, the author is worsening the racial bias against Asian Americans. In particular, the author also uses one single case of parents not approving their children’s plan for life and tries to generalize that to all Asian parents. Asian parents are demonized in this article. While the truth is, Asian parents, including myself, are the same as any other American parents, who love their children and who are willing to do anything they can to support their children’s happiness. Second, if this article is about discussing racism against Asian American, this statement is the typical example of “blame the victim”. We are proud of our culture. We are proud that we value education and hard work, and we refuse to apologize for it. We would not tolerate any type of speech that twists the core meaning of our culture and blatantly attacks it. Third, the publication of this article itself is evidence of racism against Asian American as a minority group that anyone can just trash them thinking there would be no consequences. Sure, we as Asian Americans, like any other ethnic group in this country, are not perfect. But imagine if someone writes an article just like this but addressing another minority group calling them “they themselves are responsible for their unhappiness”. Lastly, we are especially uncomfortable that the author singles out the East Asian Americans, especially the Korean and Chinese Americans. This is racism. For the above reasons and more, we are deeply disturbed that this article is now still online and possibly will be read by millions of fellow Americans and will only exacerbate the racism against Asian Americans. Hence we request the editorial board please remove this article at your earliest convenience.
“In Harvard’s case, Asian Americans received the highest scores for academics and extracurricular activities among all racial groups, but received the lowest personal rating.
