September 1st, 2021 Dear parents, On August 31st, Choicelunch received reports of student illnesses at a handful of schools in Northern California. While not all the students who ordered the Spaghetti with Meat Sauce were impacted, all reports of impacted students had that specific entrée in common. I would like to give you an update on what we know now, what we have already done, and what we are planning to do in response. Choicelunch served 2,300 Spaghetti with Meat Sauce entrees across Northern California on August 31st. As of 11:45am on September 1st, reports of illness appear to be isolated to six schools. Among all six campuses, not every student ordering the Spaghetti with Meat Sauce was impacted. We are trying to identify and understand commonality to determine root cause and have engaged a 3rd party food safety expert to assist in our investigation. The investigation is multi-faceted, and involves detailed employee interviews, internal process and documentation reviews, as well as conversations with our suppliers and the impacted schools to get a holistic view of our process from sourcing to consumption. I know everyone would prefer to have immediate answers, and as much as I would like to have answers to give, we need to continue the investigation and hope to isolate a root cause. Parent to parent, I’m both distraught by the situation, and resolute in pursuit of answers and actionable next steps. The “for parents, by parents” positioning of the Choicelunch program isn’t just marketing. All four of my kids eat Choicelunch daily, and my 8th grade daughter had the Spaghetti with Meat Sauce yesterday. While she was not impacted, it’s not a far stretch for me to understand the frustration you must be feeling. In my 18 years here at Choicelunch, this is the first time we’ve experienced an occurrence like this, and I am fully committed to dedicating whatever resources are necessary to both determine what occurred and prevent it from happening in the future. I know apologies don’t make children feel any better, but please know we take this extremely seriously and are actively working to investigate the matter fully.
