My mom passed away earlier this year. I will share my experience here. 1 - you will get the assets... yes. will you be able to transfer overseas, it depends. 2 - To be able to get the assets, you need to have either birth certificate (notarized) or a relationship proof (notarized) proving that you are your parents child 3 - You also need to have a "I am Me" certificate, done overseas. Proving that the person that is your parents' child in China is indeed you. This needs to be notarized by local state government and chinese embassy. I recommend to get this done with local notarized agency that is specialized in Chinese matters. They know what to do. 4 - Once you have these, things in China is a lot easier. You will be able to inherit the assets in China. 5 - You have to prove that your parents' assets earned and accumulated in China are legal and taxed before you can transfer the assets overseas (i.e. convert to USD and wire out). I think majority of people are stuck on this step, given most of their financial assets are very difficult to prove and thus will be stranded in China. Here is my experience so far... Not sure if anyone knows what to do to get "unproved" assets converting to USD and wired out.... It is very complicated.

Can't type chinese. essentially, "Wo Shi Wo"....I explained to the local agency that I need to prove that the person on Chinese records is indeed me holding foreign passport. They asked for a number of documents. During pandemic, it took me almost 2 months to get this certificate done, given.... ah... you know... local state government is half shut down by now.....

I talked to a lot of lawyers and notary offices. My parents don't have a will. But it seems that it really doesn't matter which record they use. As long as you can prove that you are your parents' kid, you will get the assets.

Very helpful!

第三步的 "I am Me" certificate 正式名称是啥

Thank you for sharing! Sorry for your loss.
