我不知道具体情况，所以对这事无法评论。但是美国住久的人，知道有个所谓 Squatter law, 又叫adverse Possession 的概念，不知这是不是属于此类事件。基本上西方都有这类法规来处理，不过细节上，不仅各国不同，各州或各county 都不同。

Adverse Possession不是简单的侵占就可以，要满足法定的年限，比如15年，各个州的时间不一，还需要满足其它各种条件，一般很难成功。
在年限到达以前房主报警或者当面要求搬离，就不可能claim Adverse Possession了。
