The terms "alien" will be replaced with "noncitizen" or "migrant," "illegal alien" with "undocumented noncitizen" or "undocumented individual," and "assimilation" will change to "integration," according to the memos. "We enforce our nation's laws while also maintaining the dignity of every individual with whom we interact. The words we use matter and will serve to further confer that dignity to those in our custody," the memo from Miller states. ICE told CNN in a statement that the agency was "adopting terminology to help rebuild public trust and reshape the agency image. The change reflects ICE's commitment to treat everyone with whom we interact with respect and dignity while still enforcing our nation's laws."
