Au Pair cost was much cheaper than the cost of nanny (east coast) and there are specific agencies that can hook you up. Au pairs are like foreign students and they are here to learn so there requirements of certain hours of school enrollments and they typically don't work on weekends and have vacation days. Stipend you pay the aupair is set by the state department so you can look it up. The agency you work with will do pre screening and then provide you with a list of candidates (you pick which region, i.e. mexico vs east europe) for you to interview and you pick one. There are a limited options to switch if you don't get along with the au pair once he/she joined you. Btw, I think you also need to cover the cost of the departure plane ticket. 10 years ago I believe cost of Au pair (live in) was about $200 a week compared with $600+ a week for a live out nanny. 2 weeks vacation for au pair and 5 weeks vacation for the nanny. I think an aupair can stay for a year and then extend maybe for another 6 month or so. Thus if your kids are young, expect to go through many au pairs. The duties of the au pair I think it is strict so in our case, it is just taking care of the kids (exclude the weekends), i.e. driving thd kids to activities, no house cleaning etc etc. Our aupair did cook lunch for herself and the kids and did dinner for herself and we did dinner for us and the kids. We also provided a car for the aupair for weekend transportation. Use aupair can save money if it works out. My kids still remember all the aupairs and kept in touch with some of them. P.S. think twice about getting young blue blond from east europe so the man of the house don't get tempted :-) Heard some gossip stories.
