Find your base hourly rate
Divide the salary you want to make by the number of hours you expect to work in the year. For Example- If you want to make an equivalent of $120K annual salary, dividing $120,000 by 2,000 hrs/year (assuming 2 weeks or 10 days off for national holidays/personal off days) will get you to $60/hr. This is your base hourly rate if you work as an independent contractor.
Adjust higher for Independent Contractor status (1099)
As Independent Contractor (1099 in freelancer vocabulary), you get the entire amount you invoice the client and no taxes are withheld (because you are supposed to self-report them).
Adjust for Benefits
Add $3K-16K for health insurance premiums. Single ($3K), Family ($16K) Add $12K (10%) for the extra tax you pay for self employment. This is what your employer used to pay the Government for employing you (Employer Taxes).
3 hr round trip on the train is normal, 3 hrs in a car commutting is not normal beause traffic is never reliable.
