Ohio has a new record today: 2,039 new coronavirus cases. That's the second record in less than a week, after Friday's 1,840 cases. Before that, it was July 30, when there were 1,733. Why? Unlike earlier and smaller case increases in the summer, hospitalizations are spiking this time, indicating this is not simply a case of testing more people. The hospitalization bed count of 1,042 today is up 26% from last Wednesday's total of 828 and up 85% from a recent low of 563 on Sept. 20. The record of 1,122 was set on July 28. Gov. Mike DeWine says COVID-19 is spreading through gatherings with family and friends.
U.S. researchers have confirmed a case of COVID-19 reinfection, the first in North America and the fifth in the world. A 25-year-old Nevada man tested positive for COVID-19 in April and again in June, separated by two negative tests. The man was infected with two different strains of the coronavirus, and the second bout of COVID-19 was worse than the first, requiring hospitalization and assistance in breathing. Why? Researchers don't know, but speculate he may have picked up a higher dose or more virulent version, or maybe that the presence of antibodies in his bloodstream made the second infection worse.
