也许是因为之前他们的homeschool 使用的是unshooling approach (very flexible schedule, child-led, interest-based learning),当她九年级的大儿子决定
Build Your Library Level 9
YouTube video
Executive Function and Homeschool Teens
详细地记录和讨论了他们的这段经历,分享了他们是如何成功解决这个问题的心得体会(“Details about how my teen and I addressed the achievement gap between what he wanted to accomplish vs. what he was actually doing. How we talked about it, steps we took to help connect and problem solve, and what wound up working for us.” --- quoted from her YouTube video description box),希望对面临类似问题的家长们有一定的启发和帮助。
If you really want to get the most out of it, please view it in its entirety, maybe even for several times。
Resources (0:00 - 1:55): She talks about books and other resources that helped them in solving their problem. Below is the list of resources which you can also find in the description box under her YouTube video:
A Mind for Numbers: How to Excel at Math and Science (Even If You Flunked Algebra) by Barbara Oakley The Book Whisperer: Awakening the Inner Reader in Every Child by Donalyn Miller Connected Parenting by Jennifer Kolari The Gifts of Imperfection by Brene Brown Mindset: The New Psychology of Success by Carol S. Dweck Home Education (Original Homeschooling #1) by Charlotte M. Mason Lives in Balance 6 Powerful Learning Strategies You Must Share with Students
The problem (1:56 - 3:55): She details the problem --- her son spent too much time getting too few things done, and both of them were frustrated;
Build connection and trust (3:56- 10:00): Mother and son had conversations to understand and connect with each other before tackling the underline problem(s) for his "failure".
Strategize: use different skills/methods to solve the underlining problem(s)
1. Improve Reading Skills (10:01-18:09) --- Understand that different kinds of reading materials need different reading skills (nonfiction vs fiction, for example); --- How to read faster; ---Switch between light reading and heavy reading; --- Parsing the reading to achieve deeper comprehension: practice retrieving information after finishing a paragraph/a few pages until it becomes a natural part of the reading experience.
2. Time Management (18:10—22:07) --- Pamadoro method: divide a big chunk of time (e.g. 45 min) needed for a task into smaller chunks (15 min), during which one is fully concentrated, and take breaks (5 min) in between.
3. A Big-Picture View (22:08— 25:24) ---Estimate the time needed to get a task done before starting a day’s work ---Parse the long to-do list to make each task manageable ---Having a big-picture view takes away the anxiety
4.Mindset Shift (25:23-30:58): ---It is normal not knowing how to do something at first; ---Believe that “I am not able to do this yet, but this is a skill I can learn”; ---Should focus more on HOW to learn the curriculum: learn the skills to address the underlining problems, not just learn the material.
5. Honor and grow your individual attention span to improve your efficiency (30:59- 33:44)
Summarize their experience (33:45---the end) Stage 1: Empathize Stage 2: Outline the problem Stage 3: Strategize to improve executive function.

This applies to both of you --- child and parent. 4: The Reluctant Readers --- John Holt
