There's a duck in my pool! Soon we will be saying goodbye to winter weather and welcoming the warmth of spring. But as we look forward to the desert sun, we might find that we’re not the only ones looking for some poolside relaxation. Wild waterfowl enjoy also spending time in the pool, but it won’t take long for them to wear out their welcome. If you see waterfowl frequenting your property in the spring, you can assume that they may be attempting to build a nest. It is in your and their best interest to intervene as soon as possible. Check under shrubs frequently to look for signs of nest building. It is critical that you remove nests before they lay eggs. Once eggs are laid, it is illegal to relocate the nest because they are protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. Encourage ducks to relocate by: • Keeping your pool covered - waterfowl can die as a result of exposure to swimming pool chemicals or becoming trapped in an uncovered pool. • Removing attractants – identify and remove potential food, water, and shelter resources. • Using hazing techniques – make sharp, loud noises or use commercial noise makers to scare them. Don’t let them get settled. Act immediately. Thanks for helping us to keep wildlife wild!
