Dear Lake Washington School District Staff and Families: I want to thank our staff and families for your cooperation as we continue dealing with the rapidly evolving situation with COVID-19. We have continued to comply with the guidance and recommendations from the Washington State Department of Health as we make decisions about the operation of our schools. Today, Public Health officials announced additional guidance for reducing the risk of exposure and slowing the spread of COVID-19. At this time, Public Health continues to recommend that schools stay open. Health officials from Public Health – Seattle & King County and the CDC weighed recommendations for schools very carefully. Here are some of the reasons why they recommend that schools remain open: Public Health – Seattle & King County know that schools are doing the important work of educating our children. They don’t want to allow disruptions that interrupt regular school routines unless there are known COVID-19 exposure risk Again, Public Health is not recommending closing schools. If there is a confirmed case of COVID-19, Public Health will work with the school and the district to determine the best course of action including potential school closure.
Next Steps: Public Health also released new guidance that may have additional impacts on schools. We are currently evaluating that guidance and plan to share additional information tomorrow about the potential suspension of volunteer activities, building use and extracurricular events. School Attendance: Here is helpful information to consider when making a decision about sending your child to school: If your child is currently showing any signs of illness, please keep them home and follow regular district guidelines for when they should return: https://www.lwsd.org/programs-and-services/health-services/too-sick-for-school. If your child is showing signs of illness and has possibly been exposed to a patient with Coronavirus, please keep them home from school and contact your healthcare provider for further instructions and guidance。 Remote Learning: Some of our families have asked about remote learning. Last Friday, Superintendent of Public Instruction, Chris Reykdal, sent a memo to school districts which included in part: “School districts must ensure equal access to education for all students. It will likely make more sense to cancel school and/or district services and make up missed days at the end of the school year, rather than deploying a distance learning model that can be accessed by some, but not all, of your students.” At this time, staff are expected to provide instruction for the students that are present in their classrooms. When students have excused absences, staff are expected to provide projects and assignments for when they return to school. Staff are not expected to develop additional digital resources for students who are absent, but rather use existing digital tools such as Power School Learning. Students who are absent can access the digital resources that are provided as part of their regular instruction and classroom experience. We want you to know that we are doing everything possible to provide normal routines and stability for children during this uncertain time for our community. Sincerely, Dr. Jane Stavem, Superintendent Lake Washington School District
