I write to express our sincere concerns over the upcoming exchange program with Chinese students from Yichang, Hubei province. Yichang is a small city near Wuhan, where the deadly coronavirus outbreak is happening now. As you may not be aware, anyone who travels from Yichang to the USA must travel to Wuhan first. The situation in Wuhan (and many other cities in China) is much more serious than what you can learn from the news as the local government in China has not been reporting the truth. This new coronavirus is highly infectious (likely more infectious than the SARS virus). The death toll climbs as I am tying this email. Based on the information we gathered, it is safe to say that anyone who traveled to Wuhan (whether to the airport or to the train station) during the past week is highly likely to be infected. Most of the infected people have a 9-14 day incubation period, during which no symptom is detectable in the affected person, but the virus can be transmitted from the affected person to a healthy person. Given the severity of the situation, we urge the school to pause the exchange program, and prevent any Longfellows MS students from meeting the Chinese students from Yichang.
When it comes to the new coronavirus prevention, we cannot be overcautious about the risks. Please take this advice seriously not only for the sake of the students, but also for the whole NOVA community.

Sincerely,
