Five people are dead and at least 60 have been injured after a horror crash on the Pennsylvania Turnpike early Sunday morning. Multiple vehicles - including a tour bus, three tractor-trailers and a car - were involved in the crash at around 3.30am on the westbound side of the turnpike near Mount Pleasant. The bus was navigating a downhill curve when it struck and embankment and flipped on its side before the other vehicles crashed into it and each other, authorities said. Harrowing photos and videos showed the mangled vehicles surrounded by debris and dozens of emergency vehicles as snow fell on the roadway.
The Westmoreland County coroner confirmed the five fatalities. Of the 60 injured, 39 were hospitalized. It is unclear what caused the bus to hit the embankment. Investigators with the National Transportation Safety Board were on the scene.
