The New Colossus.
“Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”

"Of course that poem was referring back to people coming from Europe"

“That poem was referring back to people coming from Europe”没有问题啊。关健词“BACK to”。

New Colossus

那么,但从这句话说,“referring BACK to people coming from Europe”, 从历史的角度上来看,没有毛病。

The Statue of Liberty "poem", has nothing to do with the Statue of Liberty. The Statue of Liberty was a gift from France to after the civil war to commemorate the centennial of the Declaration of Independence, and the preservation of freedom in the United States.
The Statue of Liberty never had anything to do with immigration.
The poem on the statue, written by Emma Lazarus, was written in a contest to raise money for a pedestal to put under the statue in 1883, and was not mounted on plaque INSIDE the statue until 1903. The words on the plaque are a small portion of the poem and taken out of the context of the entire poem. The poem contest had nothing to do with immigration policies. The poem and the Statue of Liberty are two separate entities, neither one ever having anything to do with immigration. If you read the poem in its entirety, this is more evident
The Statue of Liberty was never meant be holding a light for the rest of the world to find their way here and be taken care of. The Statue of Liberty shines a light to the rest of the world to help find their way to liberty.
Hope this clears up any confusion caused by the fake press, news networks, and modern "education" in the US. They mean well, but, well, no, they don't really, but hope this helps anyway...

再引用一下他的全文“"Of course that poem was referring back to people coming from Europe where they had class-based societies, where people were considered wretched if they weren't in the right class," he said.”

100年过去,自由女神和"give me your tired and your poor"已经成了美国national identity里不可分割的一个整体。
