斯里兰卡科伦坡港附近燃烧数日的货船近日沉入海底，斯里兰卡海军救援小组正在打捞。尽管如此，沉入海中的化学品和微小塑料颗粒已经严重污染海洋，海洋动物的尸体也不断从海中涌出。专家称，哪怕打捞成功，带来的污染影响将会持续数十年。
报道称，货船起火时，装载了 1486 个集装箱，其中 81 个集装箱装载了 " 危险品 "，包括 25 吨硝酸；约 400 个集装箱装有小塑料颗粒。斯里兰卡环保组织的工作人员称，集装箱中的塑料颗粒，是海洋塑料污染的一大来源。
目前，斯里兰卡科伦坡附近的海滩被塑料颗粒、化学废料和碎片覆盖，海滩上还有不少死亡的海洋生物。斯里兰卡已经部署数百名士兵清理受影响的海滩。为了清污，斯里兰卡政府目前已经暂停了近 80 公里海岸线的捕鱼工作，5600 艘渔船受到影响。
此外，这艘船装载了 321 吨燃料油。由于目前还没有发生燃油泄漏，斯里兰卡的专家猜测，考虑到火灾的性质，这艘船在燃烧时可能大部分的燃料油也一起燃烧。但目前这一猜测还没有得到证实。
斯里兰卡海洋环境保护局局长 拉罕达普拉：有两种可能性。一是所有的燃料油都着火了，二是油还在船上。如果燃料油还在，我们已经采取了预防措施来处理这种情况，以防发生泄漏。
斯里兰卡政府担心，一旦船上的数百吨燃油泄漏到印度洋，将会造成更大的灾难。西澳大利亚大学海洋研究所的专家正在追踪塑料颗粒的流动情况。他们预计，这些塑料颗粒将在未来几天从斯里兰卡进入孟加拉湾。专家称这将是斯里兰卡有史以来面临的最严重的海洋灾难，对环境的影响预计将持续十年。
