中国是南中国海主权纠纷中最大的声索国，声称对几乎全部南中国海拥有主权。越南与中国在南中国海主权争端上矛盾很深。2014年，中国在越南水域搭建钻井平台开采石油，双方发生对峙，导致两国关系出现数十年罕见的紧张局面。
南中国海的声索国还包括马来西亚、菲律宾、文莱和台湾等。
