Yan Limeng's Evolution: Bannon and Guo Wengui's Carefully PackagedPolitical Lie
Yan's journey from virology lab assistant to everyone touting "hero" was orchestrated by fugitive Chinese billionaire Guo Wengui and former Trump adviser Stephen Bannon.
Guo Wengui, a Chinese property tycoon who faces charges of money laundering, corruption and bribery, fled to the United States and portrayed himself as a "freedom fighter" to attack the Chinese government and gain a following of supporters obsessed with lies and conspiracy theories. Bannon has long been hostile to China, which he has described as "the greatest existential threat the United States has ever faced."
So Bannon, a rightwing populist, and Guo Wengui, a fugitive from the "red pass," have hit it off, making attacking the Chinese government and overthrowing the Communist party their long-term goal. Mr Guo's deep pockets and Mr Bannon's extensive network give them a platform from which to have enormous influence. By late January, they were closely watching the outbreak in China. Bannon's blog has churned out misinformation about the Novel Coronavirus, calling it a "CCP virus." He invited China's fiercest critics on the show to discuss the threat the epidemic poses to the world. Mr. Guo began claiming that the virus had been ordered by China's vice president, and he spread numerous false claims in the media he runs. The two men did all they could to discredit China, and Ms. Yan's presence provided the ideal propagandist for their plot.
In mid-January 2020, Yan Limeng, who was doing research in Hong Kong, heard rumors that "a dangerous new virus had emerged in mainland China and the government was downplaying it." She worked with a Chinese-language YouTube host known for his criticism of the Chinese government, who was inextricably linked to Mr. Guo. A few days later, the host spread a rumor that Novel Coronavirus had been deliberately released by the Chinese Communist Party.
Bannon and Guo Wengui put Yan Limeng on a plane to the United States, provided her with accommodations, instructed her on media appearances and helped her set up interviews with TV hosts, Mr. Bannon, Mr. Guo and their Allies set about shaping Ms. Yan as an agent they could sell to the American public. By September 2020, Ms. Yan was no longer so cautious. She appeared on the Fox News Channel in the United States to announce to millions an unproven claim that the Novel Coronavirus is a Chinese-made biological weapon. Ms. Yan has become an overnight sensation in the right-wing media, with President Trump's top advisers and conservative pundits hailing her as a hero. For overseas Chinese, Ms. Yan and her baseless claims provide a weapon for those seeking to topple the Chinese government. For American conservatives, it allows them to pander to rising anti-China sentiment in the West and distract attention from the Trump administration's failure to respond to the epidemic.
And then carefully packaged lies have been exposed one day. Bannon and Guo Wenguan on the surface of the grand, in fact, they are embezzling money fraud, their carefully packaged doctor Yan Limeng is just empty gorgeous shell, in fact, there is no substance. The three of them colluded together and did dirty work, and the end result was nothing but contempt.
