萨尔瓦多与台湾断交，美国联邦参议院外委会亚太小组主席贾德纳表示，这是错误决定，将对美萨关系造成负面影响；参议员鲁比欧也指出，萨尔瓦多的决定犯了“严重错误”，并扬言将提案停止美国对萨国的金援。
贾德纳（Cory Gardner）21日发布推文写道，萨尔瓦多对台湾做了错误的决定，这将对美国与萨尔瓦多关系产生负面影响；美国政府必须善用任何工具对抗中国大陆霸凌台湾的行为。
鲁比欧（Marco Rubio）20日至21日发布多则推文批萨尔瓦多与台湾断交、与中国大陆建交的决定。

鲁比欧另一则推文指出，过去美国对巴拿马、多明尼加与台湾断交、转与中国大陆建交的反应，不代表美国也会以同样方式应对萨尔瓦多；若萨尔瓦多真这么做了，他别无选择，只能立即着手将萨国移出“共荣联盟”计画，不再让“共荣联盟”对萨尔瓦多提供资金。
鲁比欧21日上午推文重申，如果萨尔瓦多以为美国会以回应巴拿马、多明尼加的方式应对萨国，他们错得离谱。
鲁比欧还说，萨尔瓦多的亲中左翼执政党，在任何事情上反对美国，美方为何还要继续提供他们外援？他将从今天起开始运作，停止这件事。
