The fact that the Biden administration has just allowed this thing to float around overhead is a testament to his ineffectiveness and weakness. The excuse of "we don't want anyone on the ground to be hurt" is ridiculous. It's Montana. Most of the state is sparsely populated. It would be nice to capture the thing but it can't continue to spy on us like Biden has been allowing.

When you know what it is, where it comes, it is not harmful anymore. It is not able to send back any data that CCP is waiting for.

美国国防部2日晚间发现中国高空气球进入美国领空疑似搜集敏感情资，外界高度关注。中国外交部随后承认气球来自中国，但宣称属民用性质，用于气象等科研，是受西风带影响严重偏离预定航线，并对气球因不可抗力误入美国“表示遗憾”。
对中方的说法，美国国防部发言人赖德（Pat Ryder）予以驳斥。他今天在例行简报中表示，知道中国的声明，但“事实是，我们知道这是一个侦察气球，我不能说得更具体了”，气球确实侵犯美国领空并违反国际法，“这是不可接受的”，美方也在多个层级直接向中方表达这一点。
至于气球的确切位置，赖德表示，气球目前在美国中部，向东移动，预计会在美国领空停留数天，美方持续监控中。气球高度约在6万呎高空，远高于民航交通高度，具可操作性，且改变航向。鉴于未造成人员与军事威胁，目前尚未打算击落，但会持续评估各种选项。
中国侦察气球出现在美国领空，为美中关系新添紧张。美国国务卿布林肯（Antony Blinken）原订2月5日至6日的中国访问行程也受此事件影响，在今天稍早宣布延期。
